This has only happened to me once. On flat ground.

I feel like it’s one of those mistakes you would only ever make once.

I did a thing like that once...

Hired a Smart. Left it parked with the handbrake off and got out. Looked back to see it trundling away.

When I first started driving stick, I did that once. Luckily I went the wrong way out of the parking garage and had to turn back, saw my truck was 2 feet out of the spot and then realized my grave error. I was able to fix it before anything happened and learned a very valuable lesson

Goodness, very silly, but very mild, no damage done, could have been much worse, but everyone were adults about it. Fantastic.

Why don’t people use their handbrakes on automatic cars? My mom uses it all the time, every time, although she learned on a manual.

Here in Michigan, there is a good chance that if your handbrake has not been used regularly, it will probably seize if you try to use it. Many owners don’t want to take that risk. This is pretty common thinking among used cars in the rust belt.

I only use it on hills. Park on an auto makes it pretty much redundant.

perfect vid - love it. I’m usually pretty forgiving and understanding of human frailties but that’s one of those situations I just don’t get - if you don’t want your car to roll away why are you not setting the brake.

I drive an autmatic, but I always set the handbrake, even on level ground.

I never bother. I’ve actually driven away once or twice and forgotten the e-brake was on for the first couple minutes.

If people only knew how the parking pawl inside of their automatic transmission actually works, they would use the parking brake all the time. It’s just such a tiny little piece, and was never really designed to hold the weight of a car, especially on a hill.

If the park position on an auto actually engaged the brakes I wouldn’t have a problem, but that’s not how it works. With today’s pushbutton parking brakes, there’s not much of a reason why these two systems can’t be linked.

I learned to always put a manual transmission vehicle in gear before I leave it. I don’t trust the parking brake. I’ve had them fail too many times.
